One of the delights of the lovely city of San Miguel de Allende is to simply wander about, taking in the sights, sounds, and colors of this lovely colonial city. Today though, I want to make a recommendation of a wonderful bakery and restaurant just at the end of my street, Recreo and at the corner with Correo. The bakery-Panio- is filled with the delightful smells of freshly baked items of every kind from bread of various sorts, pastries, cookies, cupcakes, etc. etc. It is like having a French bakery on my corner in San Miguel de Allende-French baked goods with a Mexican touch and they are delicious! Right next door is Companio or “companion to Panio” and it is a fantastic restaurant which I sampled for breakfast this morning for the first time. The menu is extensive including, of course, several varieties of coffee and tea, juices, smoothies, all sorts of typical Mexican and international breakfast treats including things like eggs benedict, soft boiled eggs, various meats, pancakes, and French toast and just about everything one could want. I chose the simple route of cafe latte, orange juice and toasted, country bread with butter and marmalade. The bread, just baked this morning and served beautifully toasted to make the delicious butter melt, was crusty on the outside and firm and chewy on the inside. One couldn’t ask for a more delightful “simple” breakfast. I will be sampling the lunch offerings in the near future but if you are in San Miguel and looking for a place to have breakfast, I recommend Companio highly and if you want to buy some bakery items to take with you, just pop into Panio next door.
