The Winter’s Tale is one of Shakespeare’s little known but magical plays. Performed at the Garrick Theater in London’s West End by the Kenneth Branagh Theater Company and starring Sir Kenneth as the jealous King Leontes and Dame Judi Dench as the wise Paulina, the play is a magical fantasy, set in the Kingdom of “Sicilia”, at a time period not clearly determined. The play unfolds as Leontes’ jealousies lead to the deaths of his formerly beloved wife Hermione and his young son. At the same time, he casts his daughter, whom he believes to be a bastard by his former great friend Polixenes, into the wilderness presumably to die of neglect. Without revealing the details of the final scene, let us say that through the magical powers of Paulina and the plot twists of Mr. Shakespeare, “all’s well that ends well!” The costumes, lighting, music and yes, even dancing, as well as the performances of
entire cast, all combine to bring this “Winter’s Tale” to life in a most enjoyable and lively evening. A perfect play for the holiday season.
