Parade for Ignacio Allende birthday celebration

It is a big day in San Miguel de Allende today because the city is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of its native son and hero Ignacio Joseph de Jesus Pedro Regalado de Allende Unzaga!  Wow, what a name but he is usually referred here simply as Ignacio Allende.  Once a captain in the Spanish army he gradually turned against Spain and with his fellow conspirators in San Miguel, he led the fight for Mexican Independence from Spain.  His actual birthday is on January 25 but the parade, music festival, dancing, public ceremonies and big fireworks display and projection on the Parroquia is today and tonight.  I attended the parade of bands, beauty queens, marchers, military units, school children, city officials, fire trucks, etc. and plenty of marching music.  The school children here were all dressed in their colorful school uniforms.  The main square between the Parrochia and the Jardin is all decked out with a giant stage, amplification, etc. in preparation for more activities this afternoon and tonight. The square is filled with all sorts of people but mainly Mexican families, young couples and lots of gringos too!!

I am glad that you enjoy my posts about San Miguel de Allende. There are many great places in Mexico to retire in. San Miguel is a bit on the expensive side but one can still live a nice life here on about half of what it would cost in the US.
