Oxford, England United Kingdom

Everybody knows about Oxford, the Top University in the world! Yes, believe it or not, Oxford is Number One even though there is really no such thing as Oxford University. Oxford is a collection of some 38 independent colleges each run by a separate administrative body. I have visited Oxford twice in the past 39 years, once in 1980 and once in about 2008 but those were two brief half-day tours of which I remember little except of course the lovely green trees and the architecture of the different buildings.

I decided to visit Oxford again for two reasons, first, my favorite literary detective, Lord Peter Whimsey invented by Dorothy L. Sayers in the 1930s is said to be a graduate of Balliol College Oxford and two of the Lord Peter Whimsy mysteries are set in and around Oxford. My other favorite mystery series Endeavour and Inspector Morse by Colin Dexter are set in Oxford.

My Airbnb in Oxford at 81 Banbury Road is an easy 15 minute or so walk into town and today was a gorgeous, sunny, blue-sky day on which to explore the town. After my walk into town, I joined a walking tour conducted by Magnus of the Visitor Information Center. I learned a lot about Oxford but I won’t bore you with details but we did explore Balliol College which I really enjoyed especially because of its “connection” to Lord Peter Whimsey. We also visited many other sites in our two-hour-plus tour but I won’t bore you with a lot of names. It being a Sunday and still the tail end of summer with beautiful weather, the town was mobbed with tourists and, of course, I was one of them. I don’t mind being called a tourist when I am one!

To give you an idea of how things are changing in Oxford, I was window shopping at a store selling cashmere wool items like scarves, blankets, sweaters, etc. and noticed a sign in the front window seeking full-time and part-time clerks fluent in Mandarin! There are about 1500 students at Oxford from the USA by the way! Enjoy the photos and if you want more specific information about Oxford let me know.

Oh yes, I almost forgot Gees! Gees is a lovely restaurant a stone’s throw from my Airbnb and highly recommended. I had some absolutely delicious Orkney Island mussels with a lovely salad, a glass of Provence rose’ wine and dessert of roasted pears with ice cream. Absolutely delightful!
