King Charles III: A Future History Play

Jackson Pollock at the Museum of Modern Art New York City
January 11, 2016Many people are familiar with Pablo Picasso perhaps mainly based on his cubist paintings but far fewer are familiar with his sculptures which form the basis for this new exhibit at the wonderful Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), in New York City until Feb. 7, 2016. The exhibit spans the years 1902-1964 and is divided into distinct periods shown in 11 separate galleries, since Picasso’s commitment to sculpture was episodic rather than continuous. This is a very impressive exhibit including many works on loan from the Musee national Picasso-Paris which include sculpture and assemblages using many conventional sculpture media such as plaster, clay and bronze but also many unconventional ones such as lumber, cardboard, sheet metal, wire, sand, and many everyday objects such as spoons, cake molds, pebbles, spigots and palm fronds. Picasso was one of the most prodigious and long lived artists ever known (1902-1964) and from his youth to the day he died he was virtually creating some kind of art every day. This momentous exhibit, composed only of his sculptures is a fantastic and comprehensive review of his life’s work in that medium. If you live in New York City or are planning a visit between now and Feb. 7, I would highly recommend this exhibit as we are unlikely to see anything similar for many years to come.

I saw the exhibition in Late November. His body of work is truly amazing and there really is something for everyone. I’ve also visited the Picasso museum in Antibes and an exhibition of his ceramics in Vallauris.
